Waterfront Homes for Sale in Temple Terrace, FL

Looking for a Temple Terrace REALTOR or real estate agent? Below the little bit of history about Temple Terrace you will find searches set up just for this small city along the Hillsborough River.

When most people think of Temple Terrace they think of the golf course. They think of the oak canopied streets. Some don't realize that it is a separate city from Tampa. Temple Terrace is one of the 3 incorporated cities in Hillsborough County.  Lastly most don't think of historic homes when they think of Temple Terrace but within the city are 80 of the original homes built in the 1920's.  As the city regained its financial footing after world war II, the vintage homes quickly became lost among the many ranch style homes that filled this small community.  Temple Terrace has become a popular community for faculty and staff connected with the University of South Florida.  If you are looking for Temple Terrace area houses, please see the links below the history of Temple Terrace to begin your home search.  If you have questions, I am just an email away.

The original land for Temple Terrace was acquired by the wealthy Potter Palmer family of Chicago as part of a 6,000-acre winter hunting preserve. Upon Mrs. Palmer’s death in 1918, the family sold the land to developers. Temple Terrace Estates, Inc., developed the golf course and residential areas; and Temple Terraces, Inc., which developed 5,000 acres of Temple orange groves that originally surrounded what would become the City of Temple Terrace. In 1922 it was the largest orange grove in the world.

The new development was originally targeted to be a golf course community for the wealthy elite of the North. Each homeowner would have a winter villa and citrus grove tract to occupy their time and provide extra income. The golf course was designed by Tom Bendelow, famed Scottish golf course designer. The architecture of the community was to developed in the Mediterranean Revival theme, as the Florida sunshine and climate reminded many of exotic locales such as Spain and the Mediterranean area, and developers sought to capture this mystique in the architecture of the community. Red barrel tiles from Cuba and Spain certified to be over 100 years old were imported for the roofs of over 80 homes that were built in this style during the early 1920s. An example of the style is reflected in the restored San Gabriel Auditorium in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, the crash of the Florida land boom in the late 1920's and the depression of the 1930's derailed the master plan for the city. Many of those original homes have been lovingly restored.

On May 25, 1925, Temple Terrace was incorporated, with D. Collins Gillette, serving as the first mayor, and Maude Fowler, one of the foremost women real estate operators in America, serving as vice mayor.

The city of Temple Terrace has other landmarks and claims to fame. It was on the banks of the Hillsborough River that the famed evangelist Billy Graham said he received his call to the ministry.  At that time the site was a small Baptist school. Today the location is the home of Florida College, a private college associated with the churches of Christ.

Today Temple Terrace is a city undergoing a revitalization of the 56th Street commercial corridor. It is a community with the Hillsborough River running through city limits.  The river and the golf course are the two most defining features to this small but thriving city.
